NeverShoutNever! - Me & My Uke EP
Record Label: Unsigned
Release Date: January 20th, 2009

Following in the footsteps of Hellogoodbye, Chris Ingle, mastermind behind pop-act NeverShoutNever!, has recorded an EP of songs done entirely with the ukulele. The three tracks take Ingle's music in a different, but much more tolerable direction.

Last year, NeverShoutNever! reached success with the release of The Yippee EP. He began to reach a ridiculous amount of daily plays on myspace and even peformed one of his songs for MTV's TRL's unsigned segment. It was obvious that he wasn't the most successful unsigned artist of 2008 by accident. However, I never understood the hype. The cutesy acoustic/pop-tronica trend at that point became a bit irritating, even for me. The genre was done much too often for NeverShoutNever! to have any lasting value on me and if I was going to listen to it, The Yippee EP would be at the bottom of my queue.

Thankfully though, the Me & My Uke EP is a small breath of fresh air and something that hasn't given me a headache after repeated listens. The stand-out of the three, ironically enough, is an older song of his re-done in ukulele fashion. "Your Biggest Fan" blows the original out of the water and makes me wonder how the rest of his songs would sound like if done the same way. The other two tracks featured, "Trouble" and "Did It Hurt," make for an enjoyable EP with catchy hooks all around.

Chances are this is just a one time thing for NeverShoutNever!. The band's full-length (set for release this summer) will probably return to their previous sound, but with Forrest Kline (who also released a ukulele EP with his band Hellogoodbye) on production, it certainly has potential to be a hit. Seeing as this EP was released as a free download, it shouldn't be passed up regardless if you're a fan of his music or not.
